ERA Interim

ERA-Interim is a global atmospheric reanalysis produced by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF).

Temporal Coverage and Resolution:

  • ERA Interim data is available starting 1979, it is updated monthly with a two month latency.
  • 6 hourly (00:00, 06:00, 12:00, 18:00)
  • Synoptic monthly means (mean for each of 00:00, 06:00, 12:00, 18:00)
  • Monthly means of daily means
  • Monthly means of daily forecast accumulations

Spatial Resolution:

  • Horizontal resolution of approximately 80km.
  • Vertical resolution:
    • 60 model levels from surface to 0.1hPa
    • 37 pressure levels from surface to 1hPa

Should you require data not currently available, you can place a request for it at the ERA Interim data request page. We will be happy to download it and have it stored temporarily with us.

ERA Interim Filenames at the IACDC

At the IACDC, ERA Interim filenames follow the convention set by Obs4MIPs. (https://www.earthsystemcog.org/projects/obs4mips/).

In the following format: field_time-frequency_reanalysis_ERA-Interim_yyyymmdd-yyyymmdd.nc

So for example, air temperature on pressure levels, with a temporal resolution of 6 hours for 1st-30th June 2016 has the following filename: ta_6hrPlev_reanalysis_ERA-Interim_20160601-20160630.nc
